How You Can Help Your Child Secure Scholarships: Lessons from My PSC Journey

The Road to the Public Service Commission (PSC) Scholarship

Winning the Public Service Commission (PSC) scholarship changed my life. But not in the way you might think.

Looking back, it wasn’t an easy road as it was filled with long nights writing essays, nerve-wracking interviews, and endless self-reflection. If you’re here, you’re probably wondering what it takes to secure this prestigious scholarship.

In this guide, I’ll break down everything you need to know about the PSC scholarship, from the types of scholarships available to practical strategies for success. Whether you’re a student preparing to apply or a parent guiding your child, this article will give you the insights and tools to navigate the process effectively.

But beyond just securing the scholarship, I want to share the lessons I learned. Lessons that ultimately led me to turn down the PSC scholarship to pursue my passion for education. Today, as a student of the University of Oxford and the founder of MACRO Academy under Think Teach Group, my mission is to empower students with the same mindset, resilience, and strategy that got me the PSC offer.

What is the Public Service Commission (PSC) Scholarship?

The PSC scholarship is one of the most prestigious awards a student in Singapore can receive. Awarded by the Public Service Commission, this scholarship is a golden ticket for students passionate about serving the country’s public sector. More than just financial support, it opens doors to leadership opportunities and often provides a fast-tracked career in public service.

Types of PSC Scholarships

1️⃣ Undergraduate Scholarships – Covers undergraduate degrees for students entering university. Applicants can apply before starting university or during their penultimate year.

2️⃣ Master’s Scholarships – For those pursuing postgraduate education, particularly in Public Administration.

3️⃣ Lee Kuan Yew Scholarship – A prestigious postgraduate scholarship recognizing individuals with exceptional potential to contribute to society. It is aimed at future leaders with strong academic and leadership records.

Timeline for PSC Scholarship Application in 2025

The PSC scholarship application process is structured and competitive. Here’s a general timeline based on previous years:

• September 2024 to March 2025: Application window opens. Start preparing essays, personal statements, and required documents early!

• Till June 2025: Shortlisted candidates are invited for interviews and psychometric  assessments.

• July to August 2025: Final selection and notification of successful candidates.

🔹 Pro Tip: If you’re hoping to maximize your chances, request for a referral letter early and begin interview preparation months in advance.

Be sure to check the official PSC website regularly for updates and deadlines—missing a key date could cost you the opportunity!

How Competitive is the PSC Scholarship?

Here’s the truth: competition for the PSC scholarship is fierce.

Every year, around a thousand of Singapore’s top students apply, but only a handful receive the award. The selection process is rigorous, focusing not just on academics but also on:

✔️ Leadership Potential – Can you influence and inspire others?

✔️ Critical Thinking & Policy Awareness – How well do you understand Singapore’s challenges?

✔️ Resilience & Adaptability – Can you handle setbacks and uncertainty?

Still, don’t let the numbers scare you. With the right preparation and mindset, it is absolutely possible to stand out. And that’s exactly what we’ll cover next.

Steps to Increase Your Chances of Getting the PSC Scholarship

1️⃣ Nail Your Written Application

Your personal statement is your first impression—so make it count.

✅ Be authentic – Too many students write what they think the PSC board wants to hear. Instead, highlight your unique perspective.

✅ Show, don’t tell – Rather than saying “I’m a great leader,” illustrate it through real experiences.

🔹 Example: Instead of writing “I am passionate about public service,” tell a compelling story about a community project or leadership initiative you led.

2️⃣ Prepare for the Interview

The PSC interview can be intense, but it’s your best opportunity to showcase who you really are beyond your application.

✅ Mock Interviews – Practice with seniors, mentors, or even in front of a mirror!

✅ Know Your “Why” – Be clear about why you want this scholarship and how you plan to contribute to Singapore’s public sector.

✅ Stay Informed – Read up on current affairs and policies—many interview questions are based on real-world issues.

3️⃣ Seek Feedback and Mentorship

Find someone who has been through the process—a senior, teacher, or mentor—and ask for feedback on your essays and interview responses.

🔹 At MACRO Academy, we provide mentorship programs that equip students with essay coaching, strategic preparation, and interview training—giving them a real competitive edge.

Common Mistakes to Avoid

Even the brightest candidates make mistakes that hurt their chances. Here are the most common pitfalls:

❌ Starting Too Late – The application process takes time! Start early to refine your personal statement and interview skills.

❌ Over-Focusing on Academics – The PSC isn’t just about grades. Leadership, adaptability, and service-oriented experiences matter.

❌ Ignoring Feedback – Constructive feedback is crucial for growth—don’t dismiss it

Why I Rejected the PSC Scholarship

Despite making it through six rounds of grueling interviews and securing the scholarship, I ultimately chose to turn it down.

Why? Because education was my true calling.

During my preparation, I realized that mentorship, teaching, and empowering others gave me the most fulfillment. This realization led me to pursue Economics and Management at the University of Oxford, and later, to join Think Teach Group to launch MACRO Academy, an initiative focused on helping students build confidence, resilience, and strategic thinking skills.

At MACRO Academy, we integrate:

✔️ Personalized Learning Plans – Tailoring strategies to individual student needs.

✔️ Mentorship & Leadership Development – Building confidence through real-world challenges.

✔️ Strategic Thinking & Interview Coaching – Teaching students how to think, not just what to memorize.

Through MACRO Academy, I help students develop the same skills that got me the PSC scholarship—but in a way that allows them to pursue their own unique paths.

My Calling: Empowering the Next Generation

I was offered one of Singapore’s most prestigious scholarships, but I turned it down to follow my true calling. To help students develop the mindset and strategies for success in any path they choose.
