What does General Paper tuition at MACRO Academy cover?

We cover both components of the 8881 paper. Paper 1 is essay writing across the full range of GP themes: science and technology, politics and governance, economics, media, environment, arts and culture, and social issues. We focus heavily on argument structure and the use of real-world examples because that is what separates A essays from C essays. Paper 2 covers reading comprehension, the summary question, and the Application Question. The AQ is where most students leave marks on the table, so we give it more attention than most programmes do.

I can argue my point in conversation but I keep getting C and D grades for GP essays. What am I doing wrong?

Almost always, the problem is argument structure, not ideas. You might have a clear opinion but if it does not read as a coherent argument to the examiner, it will not score. A-grade GP essays have a thesis that is actually contestable, body paragraphs that do one job each, and an evaluation section that acknowledges complexity without collapsing into it depends. Most students have never been taught this explicitly. Their English lessons taught them to write, but not to argue. We fix that gap directly.

Is General Paper actually a subject you can study for, or does it just depend on how well-read you are?

It is absolutely a subject you can study for, and this is probably the most common misconception about GP. Being well-read helps, but the examiner is not testing how much you know. They are testing how well you can construct and sustain an argument, engage with the question set, and evaluate competing perspectives. Those are skills. They are teachable, and students who develop them consistently outperform students who rely on general knowledge alone. The content we teach, real-world examples, philosophical frameworks, current events, is also learnable. You do not need to already know it.

Our GP students consistently achieve well above the national average for A grades at A-Levels. GP is also the one subject where progress is visible over the course of the year. Students who join with U or S grades and commit to the programme regularly achieve C or above by A-Levels. Students who join with B grades regularly achieve A. We talk about realistic targets during the first consultation so you have a clear picture of what the work can deliver.

How does MACRO help with Paper 2 comprehension and the Application Question?

Paper 2 is the component most students underestimate. The comprehension and summary questions are more mechanical than they look, and students lose easy marks by paraphrasing incorrectly or misjudging the scope of a summary. We teach these as skills with clear technique, not as things you either get or do not. The AQ is harder. It requires you to take what the passage argues and apply it to a context you supply yourself. Students who have never been taught how to build that bridge almost always answer the wrong question, even when they understand the passage. We address this from early in the programme.

Yes, but the approach matters. If you have limited time before Prelims, going back to basics on every theme is not useful. We focus on what is most likely to move your grade fast: argument structure for Paper 1 and the AQ for Paper 2. These are the areas where marks are most concentrated and where technique improvements show up quickest. We run a short diagnostic at the start so we are not guessing where the problem is. Students who join late and commit to the process consistently see grade movement. It is a shorter runway but it is not nothing.

Where are GP classes held and how many students are in each session?

Classes run on weekend afternoons and selected weekday evenings at four centres: Upper Thomson, Bukit Timah Plaza, Kovan, and Siglap, plus online. Each session is 2 hours. We cap each class at 10 students. If your preferred slot is full, we find you the next available opening rather than overfilling the session. You pick your location and timing when you enrol and can change if your schedule shifts during the year.
