What is the difference between Pure Biology and Combined Biology?

In Sec 3, students take either Pure Biology (a standalone O-Level subject under syllabus 6093) or Combined Science with Biology as one of two components (syllabus 5076/5078). Pure Biology covers the syllabus in significantly greater depth — including detailed genetics, molecular biology, and human physiology — and is the prerequisite for taking H2 Biology in Junior College. Combined Biology students are not eligible for H2 Biology under current MOE admissions rules. MACRO's programme is built around the Pure Biology 6093 syllabus.

Does MACRO prepare students for the practical paper?

Yes. SPA has been phased out, but the practical paper (Paper 3) is still a fixed component of O-Level Pure Biology and tests microscopy, food tests, biological drawings, and experimental design under timed conditions. We cover practical-paper technique alongside the theory — slide labelling, observation language, the conventions for scaled biological drawings, and how examiners credit each step of an inference.

My child is already in Sec 4. Is it too late to join?

No. We have students join at Sec 4. In the first class, we diagnose which Sec 3 topics have gaps — most commonly cell structure, movement of substances, and the human nutrition/transport/respiration chain, which feed directly into Sec 4 homeostasis, excretion, reproduction, and inheritance. We close those gaps while keeping pace with current Sec 4 content. Contact us and we will advise the right entry point based on your child's school and current performance.

How does the Sec 4 programme differ from Sec 3?

Sec 3 builds the foundations — cell biology, biological molecules, and most of the plant and human systems (nutrition, transport, respiration). Sec 4 layers on the regulatory and continuity strands: excretion, homeostasis, co-ordination, reproduction, cell division, molecular genetics, inheritance, and ecology. Sec 4 also introduces multi-system questions where examiners deliberately combine topics — for example, a homeostasis question that pulls in transport in humans and excretion. We prepare students for these multi-topic questions explicitly.

How does MACRO prepare students specifically for WA, Prelim, and the O-Level paper?

For each major exam, we run internal mock assessments — Paper 1 (MCQ), Paper 2 (Structured and Free Response), and practical-paper question sets — in the weeks before, marked and reviewed with full tutor feedback. Students walk into the real paper having already sat a full mock under exam conditions. For Sec 3, this covers WA and EOY. For Sec 4, it covers WA, Prelim, and the O-Level itself.
