The kid who got the right answer scored worse.

SEC/O Level A-Math doesn’t reward correct answers. It rewards correct working.

Here’s the same 10-mark question, marked the way Cambridge actually marks it.

The polynomial f(x) = 2x3 + ax2 − 13x + b has a factor of (x − 2) and leaves a remainder of 18 when divided by (x + 1).

  1. (a)Find the values of a and b.[5]
  2. (b)Hence, factorise f(x) completely and solve the inequality f(x) ≤ 0.[5]

Total [10]

Student A

Working shown. Final answer incomplete.

(a)
f(2) = 0M1
2(2)3 + a(2)2 − 13(2) + b = 0
16 + 4a − 26 + b = 0
4a + b = 10   ... (1)
f(−1) = 18M1
−2 + a + 13 + b = 18
a + b = 7   ... (2)
(1) − (2):  3a = 3M1
a = 1,   b = 6A1 × 2
(b)
f(x) ÷ (x − 2)   =   2x2 + 5x − 3M1
2x2 + 5x − 3 = (2x − 1)(x + 3)M1, A1
Roots:   x = 2,   1/2,   −3

Student B

Final answer correct. No working shown.

(a)
a = 1,   b = 6A1 × 2−M1 × 3
(b)
f(x) = (x − 2)(2x − 1)(x + 3)A1−M1 × 2
x ≤ −3   or   1/2 ≤ x ≤ 2A1−M1

Summary. Student A earned 9 marks out of 10 despite arriving at an incomplete final answer, by showing every working step. Student B earned 4 marks out of 10 despite reaching the correct final answer, because they omitted working.

Student A got the answer wrong and more than doubled Student B’s score.

This is the gap between knowing A-Math and scoring A-Math. Singapore schools teach the concepts. Most tuition centres drill more questions. We mark every script the way Cambridge marks the exam — so by the time your child sits Paper 1, they’re earning marks they didn’t know existed.
